Menopausal brainfog and memory lapses

I have been experiencing menopausal brainfog and memory lapses and it is incredibly scarey for me. I hit perimenopause, I think, at the age 46 and have had more and more issues with my memory.  It’s not just about the occasional forgotten name or misplaced keys; it’s a really bewildering feeling for me. For example, I can be driving on a familiar route and suddenly feeling utterly lost, questioning where I am and where I am going. I have had to program my GPS now so that I do not freak out while driving.

Menopausal brainfog and memory lapses

I feel like it deserves more than the name ‘brainfog’ to describe it – and for it to be taken more seriously because it isn’t just about feeling ‘foggy’, but also moments of feeling utterly detached, like I’m floating outside my body. It’s as if I’m watching a movie of my life but can’t quite sync with who I am. This creates a huge amount of anxiety for me because I end up second-guessing my actions and decisions, especially in my fast-paced work space which I love, but where I’m really struggling now.

Initially I brushed the menopausal brainfog and memory lapses aside, thinking maybe the stress of the world, like the COVID delta variant, was getting to me. But as I begin to read more I realise that it’s part of menopause and could last years. I can’t do this for years and need an answer so that I can continue to live my life.
