Perimenopausal and pregnant!

I am 48, perimenopausal and pregnant. I had been on birth control most of my reproductive life apart from when I wanted to get pregnant (willingly). Four months ago my obgyn advised me to come off my birth control. I had a light period, and had not had a period since. My obgyn did some tests and advised me I was post-menopausal. I was a little doubtful because I had read everywhere that I should be 12 months post period to ‘qualify’ for menopause.
So my husband and I half-heartedly used condoms! With me having it my mind that I was menopausal and didn’t need protection. I realise this was a ridiculous way of thinking. Long story short – I am now pregnant. Crazy days – I hope my ‘last call’ baby gets far better reproductive health care than I did.
I’m pretty pissed – the only solution I can think of is to have more basic research about women’s bodies and cycles, and not just as it relates to fertility. We need to know more about our life-time cycles to properly plan our lives.
